I bought my first
Flatcoated Retriever in 1967, my line today is descended from "Wood
Lass" who joined our family in 1970. I have had the pleasure of
sharing my life with her descendants, breeding, showing with
reasonable success, I made up my current 6th generation Champion in
2002. I have also imported the delightful young male Yatzy's from
Norway. My Flatcoats and I have picked-up at West country shoots since.
The early 1970's
I found my interest widened in 1975 with the
support of the late Mrs Kay Holmes to judging; my first show was
Newton Abbot & South Devon Canine Soc. "gundogs". I give CC's in my
own breed Flatcoated Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Labrador
Retrievers, Curly Coated Retrievers and English Springer Spaniels plus
the Gundog Group for the first time in 2005.
I have through International judging being
able to travel world wide. 2001 was very special, judging "BIS" at the
United Retriever's Championship Show in August and the first UK judge
to officiate at the United Retrievers Club Show in Sidney Australia in
the October. I have International judged my CC breeds since 1982
frequently in All of Scandinavian & European countries plus America on
many occasions, including judging the Flat-Coated Retriever Speciality
USA for the second time in California in May 2004.
I have been Associated with the Dog World
outside of my breed , having founded Westward Gundog Club , being F/T
Secretary during it's formative years up to the Club qualifying for
the Retriever & Spaniel Championships. I was also a committee member
of South Western Gundog plus Secretary for Several years. I have been
on the General Committee of the Flatcoated Retriever Society, I am at
this time Chairman of the Soc. Health Sub -committee. I have a great
interest into the present & future use of DNA for canine health
research. |

I bought my first
F/c in 1966 as a pet and look what it has lead to. That is one reason
why I do not mind selling pups to people who appear to have no
interest in show/working. You never know where their interests will
lead them. I bred two litters, acquired the “Torwood” prefix and we
worked and showed Torwood Trader to F.T. awards and CC’s. He was by
Joan Mason’s Heronsflight Tercel and I have been friendly with Joan
ever since. I was on the FC Society committee from 1972 and dropped
off in when family commitments became greater. I still retain a
position on the Show Com. I became a founder member of the NEFRA com.
And as the family has grown up and moved away I have added to my
committees by joining the Judges, News letter and lastly became Hon
Working Sec to NEFRA. The working position is only possible with the
help of David Bellamy who supports me and the society by his great
knowledge of shooting, training gundogs and availability of grounds
for working.
I have over the
years kept a variety of breeds including Minature Longhaired
Dachshunds some of which I still own and love. Our house and kennel
are looked after in our absence by my youngest daughter, who lives
near by and without whose help I wouldn’t be able to have days away at
doggy events. At the moment I am trying to cut down on the number of
dogs in the kennel but this is very hard. I hope with my new found
leisure to be able to travel and visit my friends in dogs all over the
world, most of whom I have met when judging or competing with my
Flatcoats.
